Consortium
The C3Data Consortium
Organisations that steward data in Africa, working together on what none of them should build alone: open business models, open technology, and the rules for sharing data between federated African data cooperatives.
What it is for
- 1
Shared infrastructure
Run the platform and the Data & Apps Commons for and by member organisations, rather than renting them from a company that owns the data.
- 2
Shared rules
Agree how data is described, asked for and used across cooperatives: each steward sets its own terms, and every use is on the record.
- 3
Shared work
Pilot the first data cooperatives where the risk is low, harden the services for higher-risk work, then help new cooperatives start across the continent.
It is how organisations take part in the three stages on the home page.
Who it is for
Any organisation that holds data about people or places in Africa, and wants it governed with the people it describes.
- Cooperatives and community groups
- Research groups and universities
- NGOs and civil society organisations
- Public bodies
What joining means
- Your data stays with you. Listing it in the commons describes it; the rows stay with the organisation that holds them, and anyone who wants to use them asks.
- A hub of your own. Your organisation gets a space on the platform to work with its members and with other members of the consortium.
- A hand in the rules. You help write the shared terms for describing, asking for and using data across cooperatives.
The consortium is forming now. Membership terms and how it is governed will be agreed with the organisations that join first, and published on this page.
Join the consortium
Tell us about your data and we'll set up your hub together. Write with your organisation’s name and country, the data you look after (describe it, don’t attach it), and what you hope to do with others. A person will reply.
